Yesterday, the US House of Representatives designated the second week of September as “Arts in Education Week”. This is a great step forward toward recognizing the value that the arts have in helping develop well-rounded, creative, and competitive people. I hope that artists of all kinds are able to use this week as a springboard for projects that last throughout the year. Of course, the problem of money remains a challenging one. If the funding doesn’t exist, than the programming suffers. It is difficult to find the balance between doing projects you love and are passionate about, and making a living. I have so many ideas that I could bring to life in so many ways, but I cannot continually volunteer my time. So, thank you to congress for the first steps, but the next step is to figure out a way to truly overhaul education in order to embrace all kinds of learning and creative programming.
