I am trying to get ready for the trip to Slovakia.
The most terrifying part of travel is not what you would expect. It’s not the unknown adventure–that’s what I’m going for. It’s not the flight, even though I have my occasional panic moments when I do fly (as you can read about here). It’s not the long flight alone, I flew to Japan by myself and that was much longer.
It’s not even the packing, although this time the challenge is how to pack lightly while still packing for warmth.

No my friends, the most terrifying part of the trip is . . .

THE MALL!!! (Not this mall, but any image will do).
Yes folks, the most terrifying part of this trip is the fact that I had to go to the mall. I know, I chose to go at the worst possible time (the week before Christmas) but I didn’t get my packing specifics until last week, and I want to be sure I have everything before the last minute. Plus, there are still good sales out there.
But . . . for me, the mall at any time of year is terrifying. I am bad at shopping for myself . I can’t stand trying things on in mirrors that emphasize every disgusting part of your body. I hate finding something that I think will be perfect, only to discover that when I put it on I look like a walrus stuffed into some children’s stockings.
But, brave the mall I did. I first suspected this was a bad choice when I had to play parking lot shark in order to find any parking anywhere.
Luckily that didn’t take long.
My plan was to go to only one store in the mall, with a specific mission in mind, but that was enough. As soon as I walked in and became overwhelmed by the cloying sweetness of competing perfume and the signs everywhere advertising a Special One Day Sale! I knew I was doomed.

I wandered aimlessly through the stacks, seeing clothes I’d love to have but realizing that none of them would fit. Pants, I said to myself, I need some pants, maybe a sweater, and some underwear. Stay focused.
Of course, the pants and sweater that caught my eye first were made for normal sized people. Now, before you get upset that I’m insulting myself, I’m not talking about weight here. I am 5 ft. tall. Any pants in the regular section require either major cutting or lots of cuffing. And the sweaters were meant to be long, but on me (to get a size that would fit) they would hang below my knees.
Of course, when you get to the land of petites (Where oh where are the petites in this jungle of stimulation?) then you have to deal with the fact that, in the warped minds of whoever designs clothes nobody could be short as well as a larger size. I’ve got curves people. Yes, I’m overweight, but even without the extra weight, I’VE GOT CURVES!!!
Finally, I made my way through the jungle, and found the petite section. I picked up a couple of things that would do, even though I still hated every moment of trying them on. I only managed to snag one of the deals (figures). Then I headed upstairs to buy some underwear . . . more trauma as this was not my usual store, so I had no clue what would be comfortable.
The stress, the music, the smells, the women talking loudly about buying more for themselves then others, the salespeople trying to help clueless men buy the perfect gift for their wives . . . it all became so overwhelming that I just grabbed something and ran.
The worst part is, I still need a few things for my trip.

Slovakia will be great, if I survive to get on the plane. Perhaps the only way to do it is with a song (apologies to Andy Williams):
It’s the most terrifying time of the year
With the car horns yelling
And everyone telling you “Buy this thing here”
It’s the most terrifying time of the year
It’s the grump-grumpiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and smelly infusions
When you walk in the mall
It’s the grump-grumpiest season of all
Wish me luck!

You realize of course now that you have braved the worst of dangers nothing else can phase you! Love the song!!
Dec 20, 2011 @ 13:51:53
But I have to go back and brave more stores. I’m skeered.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 14:06:12
I hate shopping. Hate it. I also don’t prefer crowds, loud sounds, Christmas carols, trying on clothes, parking, and the fact that there’s no such thing as a 28 inch inseam. So, you did amazingly well in my opinion!
Dec 20, 2011 @ 14:07:37
Glad I’m not alone.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 15:14:56
I absolutely hate shopping (and especially the mall) and I’ve been there twice in the last two days! So, I know exactly what you’re going through (well, not exactly — thank GOODNESS I’m shopping for presents and not clothes (sorry)!)
Dec 20, 2011 @ 15:18:34
I’m bad at that too. For presents, I’d rather go to quaint little stores, if you can find them anymore.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 15:37:10
Lisa, this is hysterical–mostly because I can relate so well. I despise the mall. Even on the best of days the mall is hell. This time of year–I shudder to think about it, my friend!
Hugs,
Kathy

I’m just glad I came out alive.

I hate malls and most shopping too so I feel for you. I have renamed a nearby mega mall. It is now called “Shoppers Circle of Hell”. Congratulations for surviving your journey through it.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 17:44:10
All malls are Shopper’s Circles of Hell. Some are more hellish than others.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 17:03:22
Oh poor you! You were very brave to attempt it so the trip will be a cinch! Thank you for giving me a smile today!
Dec 20, 2011 @ 17:42:05
It was either smile or scream,

I used to love the mall during Christmas shopping–but no more. Hey, speaking from an experiences outdoor hiker, kayaker and boater–look for Dri-Move or Go-Lites. Find them at sports stores–plus they travel nicely. Wear an extra long scarf–works as a nice neck pillow and keeps you warm on the plane.LLBean has lightweight, windstopper fleece that keeps you warm without adding bulk (I’m short too!)
Dec 20, 2011 @ 17:40:52
Thanks for the suggestions Terry, I have a lightweight coat from Land’s End that is super warm without bulk. I have a lot of that kind of stuff, if not specifically Dri-Move or Go-Lites. I’ll be sure to pack a scarf (I also am getting a balaclava and I have this head thing that can be used in many ways.)

You are not alone. I’m five foot and a whisker…and I HATE buying clothes. Do you buy clothes not because you like them but because they sort of fit!
I’m in FRance at the moment and I need some snowboots so I can actually go outside. No such luck. My feet or two wide and my calves are in a different place to other peoples because they have longer legs. SO, I can’t get the pigging boots up my legs.
I love the look of your Mall though. It does look extremely festive. Hope you manage to get things sorted before your trip!
HAve a great Christmas

I DESPISE shopping for boots for that reason. And yes, I definitely buy clothes because they sort of fit. Today was no exception, I just had to get something before I lost my mind.
Not my Mall, I just found one on the internet. I was afraid to take my camera out in that terrifying atmosphere. Have fun in France, I knew I should have stayed in France for a few days (I’m flying through Paris).

Does *anybody* really enjoy shopping at the mall? Man, after working my first job in retail at a department store, I’ve avoided malls like the plague. Especially around Christmas. We went into town yesterday (not even to shop) but had to battle excessive mall parking lot traffic. I couldn’t wait to come home and be away from everything festive!! I feel your pain and wish you luck on your return trip to retail hell.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 20:17:15
Have you ever read Malled by Caitlin Kelly. You should, its an interesting look at retail. I am going to try to avoid it and find an alternative.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 20:21:20
That book is on my list of things to read. I already read Caitlin’s blog on a regular basis but have yet to get around to reading her book.

I absolutely hate it, too. And the lighting in the changing rooms is always SO unflattering. Basically, I go in thinking that I have a pretty decent body, and I come out feeling like crap. Those mirror angles, bright lights, people knocking on the door to see if you’re finished yet – it’s the worst!
How exciting to be setting off on such an interesting trip – have a wonderful time.
Dec 20, 2011 @ 20:14:31
I already pretty much dislike my body, but in those awful places I suddenly become aware of cellulite and other ugliness. This week I was proud of myself for exercising three times in a row, but today made me disgusted again. Sigh.
I am getting more and more excited for this adventure.

Malls. Especially malls in festive times are a nightmare indeed. And if you’ve to try out a piece of clothing? Ugh. Slovakia is waiting, however. So that’s going to be a wonderful consolation. No?
Dec 21, 2011 @ 08:43:16
Definately, it is the light at the end of the dark mall tunnel.
Dec 21, 2011 @ 10:59:46
My daughter had a birthday party at the mall on Saturday. AT.THE.MALL. ONE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! I am still getting over it.
Hope your trip is wonderful and mall-free.
Dec 21, 2011 @ 11:09:53
That’s just wrong in so many ways. You deserve a spa day after that.
Dec 22, 2011 @ 01:08:01
I used to love shopping, even in crowded malls- but I dread it now. I’m always with the kids and it’s just so much harder to brave the bustle and the lines. It’s definitely cut down on our consumerism.
Good luck in Slovakia!
Dec 22, 2011 @ 11:06:31
I’ve never really liked it, but it gets worse as I grow older, that’s for sure.
Dec 22, 2011 @ 04:40:09
You’ll survive… Happy Holidays!
Dec 22, 2011 @ 11:05:49
Happy Holidays to you too!
